In this world, goblins are industrious scavengers, building rough but sometimes elaborate structures using crude raw materials and "found" items. There is also the necessary game logic, which requires the gate to stand out from the fence, and the lock to really stand out as something important.
My concept is that the lock was originally made by dwarfs but has been stolen and abused by the goblins for some time. That justified both the gold color and the extreme distress. The gate is made from salvaged floor or deck planks and crudely held together using barrel straps. I imagine most of the fence is more traditionally lashed together with cross beams, but even goblins recognize the need for the gate to be strong. That's why these posts are spiked together with metal bars.
This was a fun little project that really helped me to get a handle on the latest releases of Substance Designer and Marmoset Toolbag.
